KMPlayer

KMPlayer has evolved over the past few years, from a video player to a leading source for content discovery. The app's record-breaking viewership and the use of its flagship media is most visible on the gaming front, with a successful casting of Season 3 of the League of Legends World Championship. Alongside other forays into e-sports like GOM and Starcraft 2: Hearts of the Swarm, KMPlayer has established strong viewership that's created a whole new layer of interaction beyond its former identity as a standalone video player.

Pros

Unobtrusive layout: The main tools for video playback stay out of the way. Dark colors and a pop-out settings menu give users clean, uninterrupted access to features like subtitle management, brightness/contrast adjustments, and frame captures.
Full video codec support: Similar to video players like VLC and GOM, KMPlayer is a universal media player that can tackle just about any format you throw at it.

Cons

Display-heavy: KMPlayer is not a standalone video player by any means, and it encourages content discovery via partnerships with some third-party apps. The result is a preview-heavy player that throws ads and links at you at every chance it gets, making the experience like watching a windowed video service that irks with every disruption.
Bundled apps: Outfox.tv, a bundled TV widget, does more harm than good, despite its diverse library of content. Outfox.tv, in particular, has no visible method of removal or closure, outside of adding and removing via the control panel.

Bottom Line

KMPlayer remains a solid video player, but it's now a specialized player aiming for a particular audience. Some viewers will see its offerings as premium content; others will find the bundling a distraction or a nuisance. So, while the video player may have universal support and something for everyone, we cannot recommend it for anyoe seeking just a basic video player.

CCleaner

Nowadays, cookies, temporary files, and various other means of tracking your Web footprint are par for the course. Some of these trackers are useful, while others can be potentially intrusive. Thankfully, there are myriad freeware cleaners out there that help keep your system in check. CCleaner is one of the better ones for its ease of use and powerful cleaning capabilities.

CCleaner's simple and intuitive layout will appeal to users of all skill levels. Its four features -- Cleaner, Registry, Tools, and Options -- are prominently displayed on the left side of the window. We started with the Cleaner first, which breaks down your cleaning options into two tabs: Windows and Applications. The program works by first analyzing your system and then running the cleaner itself. By selecting the appropriate check boxes, we were able to clean our temporary Internet files, cookies, history, and cache in both Internet Explorer and Firefox at the same time, as well as empty our Recycle Bin and rid our computer of Windows log files. The Registry feature acts in the same fashion, letting you check off on the options you'd like to scan for issues. In less than 30 seconds, the program had scanned and displayed a long list of invalid entries that we could then opt to fix or leave alone by unchecking the boxes. In less time than it took to scan, the program fixed the issues we had selected. One note: We did have to run the Registry cleaner three times in a row before it came back with no issues found; each time it came back with fewer and fewer invalid entries. Using the Tools feature, we were able to manage our startup programs and successfully uninstall programs. We especially liked that CCleaner lets you manage your cookies so that you don't delete ones that are useful when browsing the Web. As with all Registry cleaners, we recommend that you proceed with caution before fixing or deleting any files. CCleaner does offer an online help feature, but for basic cleaning, you probably won't need it.
By default, the project opts you in for installing desktop and Start menu shortcuts, as well as adding run and open options in your Context menu. It also opts you in for installing Google Chrome and making it your default browser, so you'll have to uncheck the boxes to opt out. CCleaner installs and uninstalls without leaving any files or folders behind.

CNET Editors' review

AVG's Anti-Virus and Internet Security line follows on the heel of last year's highly-ranked security suite by not merely incorporating some minor but key tweaks to both its front-end and back-end, but a stronger push toward personal data management and privacy utilities that help prevent uninvited access to your files. Though many threats still exist, security programs as they stand now start to encompass areas of privacy utilities. Whereas the majority of threats were once external viruses trying to force their way into your machines, nowadays malware focus more on tricking users to inadvertently open doors for hijacking.

Avast Free Antivirus 2014

Design: Avast's new layout is a unique and clean take on managing security. Rather than copying a flat Metro look like so many others, Avast organizes its environment and prioritizes it in a sensible manner. Flat icons and subtle menu animations look great, secondary pop-out menus don't feel cluttered, and the toggle icon also helps create a cleaner experience.
Security: An improved firewall, noninvasive scanning, and a complementary, crowdsourced, whitelisting approach via Community IQ keeps this security suite on alert for untrustworthy sites and phishing scams. A noninvasive browser add-on protects your Web usage with built-in do not track integration and selective blockers for analytical and social trackers.
Utility: Avast represents itself as more of a security manager than just a conventional scanner. This version includes a command center-like dashboard for tracking security statistics, pop-up notifiers for system status and security news, a multidevice manager, and a streamlined upgrade pipeline via in-app store.

Cons:

Small disclosure: Installing certain components like browser plug-ins, useful though they may be, can also be viewed as an unwanted surprise. The installer gives you options to install various components but throws a lot of information and component offers to users at once without much to go by.
Varied performance: According to a previous protection report from August, Avast scored higher than the average scanner but still behind many of the top performers. The added browser plug-in, though great when it works, sometimes became sluggish when we tested out some sites with heavier analytic trackers.
Information overload: Global and personal stats are great to see, but are they really useful for the average user? Even an advanced technician can really get only so much value out of numbers without any real numerical or unit-based indication of what they represent. Perhaps a market researcher may get more use out of this.

Final Verdict:

This year's Avast release has distinguished itself as not just a malware or antivirus solution, but also as a full-on security monitor for your machine. It comes with great design, displaying a lot of information yet maintaining a high usability factor for the core feature of virus removal and malware scanning. Avast has created value beyond the security scanner, and this version is a huge leap over last year's Avast 8. We expect its protection scores to continue to increase as protection scores from third-party vendors get released.

Soft4Boost Update Checker

Soft4Boost Update Checker checks for available updates for all of the programs on your computer, so you can be sure you're always up to date. No matter how many apps you have on your computer, you won't have to worry that they're out of date when you have this software to check for you.
This app is available in multiple languages including English, Dutch, Danish, Spanish, French, Italian, and more. You can make your language preference selection during installation, and you can change it at any time. Once the program is installed, the highly intuitive interface gives you access to all program features. There are two big buttons in the upper right-hand corner of the window, one to refresh the list of out-of-date programs and one to search for updates for the programs listed. If there are programs that you don't want to update, you can deselect them to skip them once, or right-click on them to add them to the ignore list so they'll be skipped every time the program performs a scan and update check. Any of these programs can be removed from the ignore list at any time, as well.
There is also a feature that changes the skin of the app interface. From the View menu, you can choose from a list that includes iPhone, Android, Bionix, VIPZone, Metal, and more. This app is free, and it's a handy tool to have on your computer, so you can make sure you have the latest version of all apps and programs. Especially if you have a lot of programs installed, this tool will save you a lot of time and give you peace of mind.

Soft4Boost Disk Cleaner

Soft4Boost Disk Cleaner scans your computer for problem files, produces a report detailing the findings, and repairs the problems for you. This app will keep your computer running smoothly and quickly by removing the types of files that cause clutter and slow it down.
During installation of this app, you can select your preferred language from a list that includes English, French, Dutch, Danish, Spanish, Italian, and more. Once the program is in place, you can further customize it by choosing the skin that suits your style from the View menu. Options include iPhone, Android, GMP, iTunes, and Metal, among others. To start a scan, just select the types of files you'd like to scan for and click the large scan button on the upper right-hand side of the screen. The scan doesn't take long, and when it's done, you'll see a list with the number of problems found in each category. To have these problems removed, just click fix and let the app do its work. The fixing step takes a little longer than the initial scan, although the time depends on how many issues were found.
File types that this program checks for and fixes include temporary Internet files, junk files, unused empty folders, broken shortcuts, the Recycle Bin, and toolbars and extensions. The tool works well, and you can specify certain details of the repairs from the Settings menu like whether you'd like the problem files to be moved to the Recycle Bin or permanently deleted. Overall, this is a good free app to try when you need to declutter your hard drive to improve performance.

Wise Registry Cleaner

Wise Registry Cleaner scours your Windows Registry for invalid entries and system-slowing junk. It's safe, easy to use, and (best of all) free. The no-nonsense layout groups all the features you need right where you need them, including Registry Cleaner, System Tuneup, Registry Defrag, and Scheduler.

Pros

Cleans deeply: Wise Registry Cleaner has Normal, Safe, and Deep Scan modes. In our tests, it found and fixed issues that similar freeware missed.
Cleans safely: Wise Registry Cleaner passed the acid test: We did what inexperienced users do and just cleaned everything, but no ill effects ensued.
Lots of tweaks: The System Tuneup optimizes Windows, network settings, and more. Like the cleaning process, they're generally safe, but as with any tool that makes system changes, you should always exercise caution.
All the necessaries at hand: Wise Registry Cleaner has the features we expect to see, such as backup and restore, Exclusion List, Command Line option, and scheduling.

Cons

Baby vs. bathwater: Any Registry cleaner or tweaker can make the wrong changes, if you let it. When in doubt, start small and add tweaks as you go. A bit more background on what each tweak does would help.
Rebooting required: That's not really bad, since a reboot is often needed to change system files in use, and the Registry Defrag requires a reboot, but be aware. It's smart to apply tweaks one by one, if you're not quite sure what each will do.

Bottom Line

We really like Wise Registry Cleaner's businesslike approach to cleaning and tweaking your Windows PC. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the Registry keeps your PC running fast, smoothly, and safely. Wise Registry Cleaner is an excellent choice for the job.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 is a substantial update to the famed malware-killing machine. This new malware hunter also integrates rootkit detection directly into the software and sports a more streamlined interface.

Pros

New design: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 sports an upgraded look that's more approachable. The more modern design is also an improvement -- larger boxes, fewer tabs, touch-friendly buttons, and adaptive windows. The program tucks nicely into your system tray when not in use and feels sleeker overall.
Features and utilities: Anti-Malware 2.0 has improved 64-bit support and now comes with built-in Anti-Rootkit. Access managers, automatic schedulers, exclusion options, and other utilities are still available, tucked away in the Settings tab.
Security: Malwarebytes tweaked the user flow to improve protection. Prior to running a scan, Anti-Malware 2.0 looks for out-of-date versions, so you'll be running the latest version without question. And while infected computers sometimes block anti-malware apps, Malwarebytes' Chameleon tech stubbornly gets Anti-Malware installed and running, whether or not the PC has malicious programs on it.

Cons

Subscription model: Although existing Lifetime owners will be grandfathered in, new users who want the premium version must get an annual subscription. However, the free version will still exist for all users.
Bottom Line
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 maintains its excellent track record as a strong anti-malware application. The visual refresh, interface tweaks, and inclusion of built-in rootkit detection make it a more modern competitor. While the subscription model may not be for everyone, it's becoming a more widely accepted standard for many security programs.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite (32-bit)

CorelDraw Graphics Suite X7 offers professional-quality design tools for graphic artists of all levels. The latest iteration of CorelDraw comes with a sleeker UI, additional tool sets, and greater flexibility. By empowering users in their workflow, Corel offers a more competitive package for digital designers.

Personalized digital studio: With CorelDraw X7 you have total control over your workspace and design process. Both CorelDraw and Corel Photo-Paint offer different types of intuitive layouts for designers of all levels. Workspaces range from minimalistic (lite), to familiar (default) and even allow custom setups. This means you can spend more time creating instead of fiddling. Adobe users will be able to hit the ground running with the Photoshop- and Illustrator-friendly layouts.
Broader hardware support: CorelDraw X7 can take full advantage of the 64-bit architecture of most current systems -- you're no longer limited by software. Multiple-monitor support allows you to expand the work environment across many screens.
Expanding creativity resources: With the new Corel Connect, you can browse, discover, and exchange patterns and fills with the online Corel community. Discover new content to inspire your creative process, or make your own pattern to share. View online tutorials and instructions to get the most out of the suite.
License and subscription model: Unlike other design suites, users can choose to own CorelDraw for a flat fee (currently $499.99) or go for a monthly/yearly subscription plan. Current CorelDraw owners can upgrade their license for a fee. This dual-purchase model allows a wider range of customers access to the design tools they need.

Cons

PC only: CorelDraw does not have a concurrent Mac release. With a good amount of visual artists choosing Apple as their main system, this lack of support can alienate those who like to do their work across multiple platforms.
Bottom Line
CorelDraw X7 finds a nice balance between the full professional suite and the standard image editor. By offering its usual massive set of tools alongside X7's additional functions, CorelDraw can offer something for everyone, regardless of their skill level. With a friendly, modern UI, comfortable workspaces, and a flexible licensing model, the suite is more usable and affordable than ever. Future add-ons promise users a mobile pattern creator tool for iOS 7 and the ability to browse patterns and fills on the go with a Windows 8 app. Lack of support means that Mac users are left out for now. However, CorelDraw's robustness as an illustrator app may tempt users to give it try, especially at its cheaper rate.
